Crowdspotting

Convention dictates that the street photographer engage their subject in close proximity. Crowdspotting challenges this notion and explores the events that occur beyond the perimeter of the standard frame.

I photograph groups of people as they gather in public spaces, using a motorized panoramic film camera with a field of view that is approximately equal to human vision.

The lens exposes the film as it slowly rotates around a vertical axis, resulting in a photograph where the left side of the frame occurs earlier in time than the rightmost side. The mechanism fails quite often, resulting in overlapping exposures that represent several spans and layers of time, simultaneously.
